The underrated city just 3 hours by train from London with huge Christmas market

This Christmas market is just a three-hour train ride from London and is said to be one of the best in the whole of Europe.

The Belgium Christmas market, located in Liege, attracts hundreds of tourists each year thanks to its array of festive stalls and beautiful set up.

Liege, which drips in unique character, sits close to the Dutch border with the Meuse river winding through the centre.

And it’s within easy reach from the UK thanks to its direct Eurostar links with London. The journey from London St Pancras straight to Brussels only takes between three and four hours.

There, you can change to an hour-long train on a luxurious double decker carriage, making for a comfortable journey.

Once you arrive, the Christmas market is right in the centre of the city and boasts over 200 chalets dishing out a number of food options.

There are also plenty of gifts on offer for those looking to stock up on last-minute goodies or stocking fillers, with handmade soaps and jewellery.

You can also bring loved ones at home a number of foodie gifts – including cheeses, chutneys, tea, coffee and chocolate.

The market features Santa’s Grotto, an ice rink and a ski ride, with plenty to do for the whole family. The market is most popular at nighttime thanks to its stunning Christmas lights and rustic stalls.

If you visit, make sure to try their famous Belgian Waffles (savoury and sweet) that can be dripped in Nutella or cinnamon and sugar.

There are also a number of meal options, with one stall dishing up handmade pasta dishes, including a creamy tartiflette.

During the day, make sure to visit St Paul’s Cathedral, otherwise known as Liege Cathedral, which is one of the most impressive buildings in the city.

Attached to the Cathedral is the Treasury, displaying art and items that explain the history of the former principality of Liege.
