The world’s best city destination is just over an hour from the UK

Whether it’s a romantic getaway, a lads weekend or a solo jaunt, there’s nothing quite like a city break to boost your mood.

But where are the most popular destinations?

According to a new study from Euromonitor, Paris was this year’s leading city break destination. The team rated cities based on tourism and business performance as well as health and safety and sustainability.

The French capital is likely to top the ranking for months to come as it prepares for the Paris Olympics this summer.

A city packed with attractions, it’s impossible to tick off all of Paris’s top sights in a mini-break. Perhaps the city’s most iconic landmark, the Eiffel Tower is Paris’ top rated attraction on Tripadvisor.

The Louvre, Arc de Triomphe and Musee Rodin were also among its best rated experiences, although tourists might have to fight off the crowds at some of these spots.

While Paris was praised for its tourism offering, France has recently launched a campaign encouraging tourists to visit other destinations instead.

Nadjeda Popova, senior manager at Euromonitor International, said: “Overtourism is one of the challenges cities are facing, impacting local communities and the environment as tourism rebounds from the COVID-19 crisis.

“Some destinations are imposing restrictions, steep taxation or reduction of hotel capacity to help limit the influx of tourists and preserve cultural heritage, while others embrace dispersion strategies that promote alternative or off-the-beaten-path destinations.”
