Tourist savagely mocked for dubbing Benidorm the ‘New York of Spain’
Thousands of Brits head off to the sunny Costa Blanca each year with cheap party town Benidorm being a popular hotspot. The town is known for its gorgeous beaches – including nudist spots – as well as cheap hotels and pints for just 88p.
Benidorm is classically full of British tourists who love to drink, sunbathe and dance the night away. Plus, there's some unusual entertainment and the stag dos can get rather extreme.
Despite the sometimes cheeky face of Benidorm it's also lauded as a great place for a cheap family holiday. But, one influencer has caught people's attention after describing Benidorm as the "New York of Spain".

The claim made their video go viral on TikTok – and hundreds of people commented to joke about the comparison. A clip by @BenidormExplorer showed Benidorm’s skyline of towering buildings and holiday resorts. It showed clips of the town by day and glittering with multi-coloured lights on an evening as the clubs and bars got up and running.
While playing the song "Empire State of Mind", Alice, who runs the account posting "solo travel tips and food recs" dubbed the town the "New York of Spain."
In the caption she added: "Did you know that Benidorm has the most high-rise buildings per capita in the world?! That’s why it earned the name 'Manhattan of the Mediterranean'".
The video quickly went viral for the claims with over 23,500 likes. But, not everyone in the comments agreed with the assessment.
One person said: "More like the Grimsby of Spain." While another said "Blackpool in the sun." Another noted: "I’d say more Miami" and another said: "Having a laugh – bring on Benidorm".
One woman said it was "more like Vegas" but others said Benidorm was a "class place to go".
One bloke noted: "Every year I go to Benidorm and it’s still my favourite". A woman added: "Feel ill how many people’s balconies overlook it".
Some said they assumed she hadn’t been to New York. The comparison may not be very accurate either – the US city has a population of 7.8million while Benidorm has just 71,988 residents.
Around 10million tourists visit the Spanish town each year, according to EnjoyTravel, while New York saw 66million visitors in 2019 alone. New York City is also 783km squared while Benidorm is just 38.51km squared.
But, both cities have their own unique draws for holidaymakers. A return flight to Benidorm, for example, can cost as little as £37 from Vueling. While heading to New York will cost Brit from £225 on SkyScanner.
Benidorm's cheapness doesn't end at flights either. Two lads who visit Benidorm multiple times a year have shared how they manage to do it mind-blowingly cheaply.
TikTok star Grumet explained: "You can get a Full English fry up for £2.50 at Uncle Ron’s and Auntie Bella’s Yorkshire Pride. If you want steak it’s only about £6.
"You can get pints for 80p from Uncle Ped’s and Cafe Benidorm. It costs more for a cup of tea than it does for a pint of lager. You can get a glass of vodka for like 3.50euros."
