Tourists slam Greek town that’s become party hotspot for ‘cheap drinks and sex’

Zante, correctly known as Zakynthos, in Greece, is a popular Greek island for both families and young groups of pals.

The town itself is famous for its strip, with bars and clubs lining the street and free shots being doled out to young party goers.

It’s little surprise that 18-30s holidays in the area are popular as there are stunning beaches, plenty of sunshine and cheap hotels.

At the height of summer, in July, you can bag four nights for two in Laganas from as little as £177, on booking.com.

You can find even cheaper rooms elsewhere on the island, but Laganas is the place to be for Brits looking for cheap pints and big club nights.

According to Party Hard Travel, a boozy bev will cost from around €2 (£1.77) or you can bag deals from PRs for two drinks and a shot from €5 (£4.41).

Plus, breakfast won’t set you back much either as a meal costs from €2-6 (£1.77 to £5.30). Bargain!

However, it seems that despite the area’s natural beauty and cheap prices tourists have found some things to complain about.

Namely, that the area is "infested with Brits".

Over on TripAdvisor, some grumpy holidaymakers complained about Laganas and its gorgeous beach.

Janis Hopkins said: "Absolutely trash, the place is full of sex shops and pubs. Litter also lines the curbs of the road and ruins this beautiful location. The beach if full of litter and it’s very overcrowded.

"Truly ruined by British tourism, there's a sunburn Brit around every corner. The place is infested with Brits which ruins the Greek heritage the island has to offer."

While Alison G added: "Dirty, seedy, strip clubs, gentleman’s club, hardly any restaurants or bars open.

"I imagine it is jumping with clubbers in high season but I’m afraid they are welcome to it…"

Tim, from London noted: "Awful backdrop of tacky kebab restaurants and cocktail bars, a thin strip of sand packed with loungers, not the clearest water and lots of beach sellers."

Nick Channing, from Hungary, added: "Great place if you’re a teenager or looking to get wasted. But not particularly clean and littered with rather inebriated tourists."

One person for the Netherlands added: "There is nothing greek about this street that mainly consists out fast food restaurants and clubs for the young British tourist who likes to get hammered at Laganas."

An Austrian said: "It is dirty and occupied by mainly British 18 year olds."

Plus, a Spaniard wrote: "Since all the bars, clubs and young drinking Brits invaded the place has sunk to the depths [of] hell."

"Drunk, semi-naked young Brits out looking for cheap drinks and sex," complained an American.

Luckily, there are still thousands of positive reviews – so if you don’t mind being surrounded by fellow Brits and getting boozy it could be a cheap hotspot for you.

An Oxford resident wrote: "Beach was lovely, clear waters but very hot sand! We always used the sunbeds at the Fishery Inn which was a British bar and the staff were lovely."

A Texan man added: "Laganas is very lively and catered to the younger crowd. If you'd like to party with the British, this is definitely the place to go."

A Hungarian pointed out one of the big draws of Laganas and said: "We actually saw some cute turtles!"
