Tourists slammed for dangerous behaviour at the world’s best but deadly beach
Reynisfjara Beach in Iceland was recently named the best beach in the world by Tripadvisor. But the volcanic black sand beach can be extremely dangerous.
In the video posted by Reddit user ‘Two_Inches_Of_Fun’, the four tourists appear to approach the water in order to take a photo in front of the waves.
However, a wave quickly comes and knocks two of the tourists to the ground. The pair struggle to get out of the water.
Luckily, the tourists all made it out of the water but it was an extremely dangerous situation to be in.
Visit Iceland warns: “Sneaker waves make Reynisfjara Beach one of the most dangerous destinations in Iceland.”

It describes sneaker waves as “huge coastal waves that can suddenly appear in a train of much smaller waves”.
The waves are much larger than those in between and can build up very quickly before hitting the shore.
Due to the danger from sneaker waves, tourists are warned never to approach where the waves are landing.

Rules (Visit Iceland)
- Don’t go anywhere near where the waves are landing. Note that sneaker waves can form even when the weather is calm.
- Don’t go bathing or surfing there, being a strong swimmer won’t save you.
- Never turn your back to the ocean (that selfie isn’t worth dying for).
- Don’t follow others like sheep, make your own judgments of the danger you may be in.
- Don’t put yourself at risk by helping others. That could result in a more complex rescue mission for emergency response teams.
