Travel industry worker claims hotels only fully ‘change bedding every two weeks’

Anyone who loves to travel knows that the best people to ask for hacks and tips are the ones who work in the industry – from hotel managers to service staff and cabin crew.

Those who work in travel often share their tricks for getting freebies, upgrades and added extras online, but sometimes there’s advice that makes us shiver.

And, that’s the kind of hint TikTok user @missjosephone92, from Ohio, US, posted online last month.

She replied to a video shared by @princessannafit who asked: “Tell me a company secret that you can share because you don’t work there anymore.”

Be warned that if you’re a clean freak this advice might horrify you!

Josephine, looking bemused, replied: “When you check into your hotel room… ask for new sheets. Everything. Linen, comforter, top cover, ask for everything new. Fresh.

“Housekeepers are trained to change the linen only. Your comforters can go about a week or two without being changed and sometimes the top covers too.

“They wait until there’s stains on them to change them.

“So ask for new s**t. Don’t get on them beds.”

Comforters are what we would refer to as blankets, eiderdowns or sometimes quilts – they rest onto of the thin sheet you cover yourself with to provide warmth.

While top covers refers to the flat sheet between you and the quilt.

So it’s pretty gross to think that two week’s worth of people could have slept underneath them before you snuggle in.

The video swiftly went viral with over 230,000 people liking it and almost 10,000 commenting – most of whom were horrified.

One commenter said: “Me thinking Lysol was enough… thank you!”

“You never see comforters on the linen cart…never,” realised another.

While a cabin crew member noted: “I’m a flight attendant and I do this!

“I also pull off all covers before I leave and put them in the bathtub and turn on water.”

“It feels like something that we all knew but told ourselves wasn’t happening,” shuddered a poster.

While another joked: “Why are hotels so expensive when they don’t even keep their guests safe and rooms clean?”
