Turkey holidays: Entry rules ramp up following UK travel ban – FCDO issues new update

Dr Hilary says travelling on planes is ‘risky’

Turkey has axed travel with the UK over concerns of a new COVID-19 variant which originates in the country and is thought to be 70 percent more contagious. The nation has also suspended flights to and from several others nations, including Brazil, Denmark and South Africa due to variants of the virus.

Now, the nation has tightened its entry requirements even further for both passengers hoping to enter the country, and those transmitting through.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice page in line with these changes.

“Turkey has temporarily suspended passenger flights between UK and Turkey. However, limited flights from Turkey to the UK continue,” explains the FCDO.

“Turkey’s international land and sea borders are open. However, short-notice changes, especially temporary closures of land borders, are possible and you should check access locally.

“Passengers wishing to transit through airports in Turkey on to a domestic Turkish flight will be required to take another PCR test upon arrival, before catching their onward flight.

“You must wear a face mask at all times whilst in an airport, and for the duration of all flights, to and from Turkey.”

However, passengers transiting through Turkey who have been in “high risk” countries, including the UK, within the previous 10 days are subject to somewhat stricter rules.

The FCDO explains: “Passengers who are in direct transit through Turkey to other destinations do not require a negative PCR test, unless their journey originated in UK, Denmark or South Africa.

“Passengers transiting Turkey from the UK, Denmark or South Africa will be required on boarding to show a negative PCR test result taken within 72hrs of departure to Turkey.”

Passengers who arrive into the country will be subject to a medical evaluation, including temperature checks.

Any travellers who have been in the UK within the previous 10 days, who wish to stay in Turkey, will be subject to 14 days of quarantine upon arrival.

Quarantine must be undertaken at a facility designated by Turkish authorities.

“People who arrived after 25 January 2021 have the option of taking a PCR on day 10 of their quarantine – if negative, the quarantine can end at that point,” states the FCDO.

Regardless of a passenger’s departure destination, all arrivals must provide a negative coronavirus test taken within 72 hours prior to their journey.

Passengers will also be required to fill out a “passenger locator form” setting out their previous movements.

“You may be asked by your airline to provide personal information regarding COVID-19 that may be shared with Ministry of Health and third countries when necessary,” warns the FCDO.

“Anyone who knowingly provides false information may be prevented from travelling.”

Turkey has so far recorded around 2,442,350 cases of coronavirus throughout the pandemic and approximately 25,344 deaths as a result.

In the UK, there have been around 3,689,746 cases of coronavirus recorded.

At the time of writing, the fatality rate sits upwards of 100,000.
