UK’s ‘best beach’ has £3 beers and sands visitors have ‘never seen’ elsewhere

Britain’s hundreds of beaches are rarely spoken about but make a fantastic staycation hotspot for those who don’t want to venture too far. While the classic days of the UK seaside are behind us there’s still a whole range of gorgeous bays to explore.

Some in the likes of Cornwall have been compared to Hawaii or even look like the Caribbean, while others are in London or up in Yorkshire and celebrated by locals.

But, a recent study found the UK’s most popular beach which we Brits flock to year after year. The study, by Holidu, looked at Instagram and TikTok to find the most shouted about beach that you can enjoy this summer.

The top prize was snagged by Weymouth Beach, in Dorset, which is set in a gently curving bay. The beach was once a firm favourite with King George III too!

The award-winning beach has bagged prizes in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Awards, the Quality Coast Awards and even has been recognised by the Marine Conservation Society. In light of the high praise it’s no wonder that staycationers and day-trippers enjoy the coastal water by swimming and getting stuck into water sports.

There’s a picnic site for those who don’t want to spend too much cash and beachside cafes, restaurants, fish and chip shops and ice cream stands for those who want to buy as they go. Plus, families who want to give their kids the vintage seaside experience can watch Punch and Judy shows, get them a ride on the donkeys and try the kids’ rides and pedalos.

Paddleboarding, kite-surfing and bodyboarding are all popular at the beach and the gorgeous sand is perfect for relaxing and even enjoying a beach picnic. Weymouth Beach has also been praised for being clean so you can let your kids enjoy the sand and sea without too much worry.

Weymouth beach also has plenty of events for visitors to get stuck into from festivals to sports championships – including volleyball and wrestling – and even fireworks displays in August.

The beach is patrolled by lifeguards daily rom April 29 to September 24 from 10am to 6pm. There are multiple loos and baby change facilities around the beachfront and town so you won’t be caught short either!

There’s parking on the beach – including accessible parking – and even a dog friendly section for your furry friends near the Pavilion. Plus, looking at prices for the area they aren’t sky high.

According to Hikers Bay, the cost of a three course meal for two people at a mid-range restaurant is just £45, while a meal for one is just £15.

A bottle of beer will set you back around £3.80. But, there is a Wetherspoon near the beachfront – The William Henry – where a lager costs from £2.57 a pint.

Tourists and locals alike have raved about the beach on TripAdvisor. Treffor Schilling-Jones said it was "one of the great English seaside beaches".

He added: "Weymouth beach is the perfect place for young children, The sand is the best for making sand castles in the UK. It is fine and almost white. The sea is always calm and slopes gently. No dangerous drops or holes. The traditional, infamous Punch and Judy show is wonderful.

"Children, parents and grandparents have been laughing at it for generations. In the Summer months there is a fun fair at one end. I have been coming here since 1953 and never grow tired of it."

While, just this month, a Londoner added: "Weymouth is without doubt my favourite seaside resort in our entire country. Weymouth has everything an English seaside resort should have. Donkey rides, Dotto train, Punch and Judy, cafes, restaurants, fish and chips, a theatre and really lovely people.

"I cannot sing the praises of Weymouth and its people high enough. Great for families and the older generation alike. Plenty of benches and toilets along the seafront which was a bonus."

June A, from Surrey, commented: "Lovely golden sandy beach with skirts the bay – clean with plenty of places to sit and lots of bars and cafes."

While another visitor, from Derby, noted: "Just been in Weymouth for a few day and have to say I’ve never seen a nicer or better maintained beach anywhere in this country."
