The UK's worst seaside towns have been revealed, with unimpressed tourists leaving scathing reviews of the beaches and facilities.

Rhyl in North Wales has taken the unfortunate top spot, despite remaining a firm staycation favourite for many families.

The new rankings from The Telegraph were scathing, with the North Wales seaside spot being tipped as an example of "how not to do things".

The town's popularity has taken a hit in recent decades as it's become easier to find heap holidays abroad, causing some of its key attractions such as a beach funfair, old pier and Pavilion theatre to close their doors.

In fact, a number of visitors have taken to the likes of Tripadvisor to leave unimpressed and sometimes scathing reviews of the town.

"Whoever planned the beach front at Rhyl has committed a crime," one person wrote. "Instead of seeing the view of the absolutely beautiful beach, there’s just a massive car park."

It wasn't all bad however. The town's beach continues to get plenty of positive attention from visitors.

One holidaymaker wrote on Tripadvisor: "I’ve been coming to Rhyl beach since I was a baby it’s changed so much (the promenade, sea front, shops etc) over the years.

"The beach has always been full of pebbles and shells but this year (and I know it’s very early in the year) I was very surprised at how clean it looks, hardly any litter at all. We would have stayed longer as it was a joy to walk along but it was a bitter cold windy day."

Another added: "Beautiful beach, lovely to watch the sun setting. Parking reasonable but some side streets free. Dog friendly beach. Recommended."

It wasn't just Rhyl that didn't impress in the rankings.

South Shields took the second spot, being criticised for being part of an urban sprawl without the nightlife and culture you'd expect to find in its centre.

Some of those who've made the trip to the area have left unimpressed by the shape it's kept in. "Very dirty. Dog poop and lots of broken glass," one person wrote beneath a one star Google review.

However like Rhyl, its beach remains a favourite with visitors and locals thanks to its golden sands and blue sea.

The third spot went to Weston-super-Mare, which was deemed as lacking independent chains, feeling a bit 'scruffy' and having lost the charm its art deco buildings once delivered.

Most reviews of the seafront are favourable, but those which aren't pull no punches.

"One the most unfriendly places I have visited," one person recently wrote on Tripadvisor. "The locals working in the shops and especially on the pier are rude and be ignorant towards the visitors."
