Welsh village named the ‘strangest and most charming’ place in the UK

Summer is coming to an end, but if you are not able to visit Italy on holiday then do not fear as there is a beautiful Italianate-style village located in the UK that should be your next place to visit.

Portmeirion is located in Gwynedd, Wales, and has been described as a “dreamlike” village in Britain due to its colourful pastel Mediterranean buildings, making it a unique yet eccentric location.

It is a small tourist village created by the architect Sir Clough William-Ellis who was an environmental campaigner who wished to create a beautiful village without disturbing the landscape and wildlife.

Pavlina Sudrich. s “outdoor adventurer” and travelling expert who enjoys sharing the best places to travel on social media has described Portmeirion as one of the “strangest and most charming” places she has been to.

She said: “It’s the UK’s most bizarre village and it’s the smallest Mediterranean town that is nowhere near the Mediterranean. It’s Portmeirion, an Italian oasis in the heart of Wales.”

Why visit Portmeirion?

Portmeirion is the perfect place to visit no matter the time of year, as it is home to a subtropical forest, a Japanese garden, a Chinese-inspired lake as well as a Victorian walled garden so there are plenty of beautiful places to explore whatever the season.

There is also plenty of natural scenery to explore as Portmeirion is surrounded by white sandy beaches, steep cliffs and woodland making it a picturesque location.

It is renowned for its architecture and combines different statues, arches, slopes, and window sizes to make the village appear larger and like a location from a storybook. The Rough Guide to Wales describes the village as looking like “a gorgeous visual poem.”

It contains a plaza in the heart of the village which has a coffee shop and spa nearby, and will be known to some Brits for being the location where The Prison, a 1960s cult classic television series starring Patrick McGoohan, was filmed.

Portmeirion also has a rich history with music as it is the filming location for many famous music videos by musicians such as Iron Maidan, Siouxsie an the Banshees, and Supergrass.

There is also a series of festivals in Portmeirion throughout the year such as Festival No Six, an art and culture festival, and its famous Christmas festival which draws many people to the beautiful Mediterranean village/

What is there to do in Portmeirion?

The best reason to visit this whimsical village is to experience Italy without even boarding an airplane or experiencing the Italian summer heat.

There are many walking and driving tours around the area that can give you more insight into the rich history and agricultural significance of the village. You can take a buggy tour which will not only take you around the pastel village but also on a forest trail so you can take in the area’s magnificent views where you can take as many pictures as you wish.

Like Italy, it is renowned for its food and hosts a series of award-winning restaurants, such as the colourful Art Deco restaurant located at Hotel Portmeirion which has an incredible view of the sandy beaches nearby and is renowned for its afternoon tea.

There is also the bright green Town Hall, a retro 1950s cafe in the village center which is the perfect place to enjoy cakes, filled baguettes, casked ales, and its variety of wines and spirits.

Online many people who have reviewed Portmeirion have said they were amazed by their visit. One user wrote: “The village is breathtaking and the views spectacular in all weathers. The Prisoner references are subtle and take you back to the series.”

Someone else wrote: “Wonderful place for the whole family to explore. It is very unusual and has a lot to offer. The buildings are in a very good condition and the place looks very picturesque.”
