It isn’t every day that we see luxury hotel brands swap competition for cooperation, but recently, Mandarin Oriental and Oberoi—two groups whose properties frequently top our Readers’ Choice Awards—announced an exciting alliance. The long-term partnership covers nearly every facet of a hotel stay, from perks for guests and food and beverage experiences, to spas and even employee trainings. Instead of blending or merging their iconic legacies, the two Asia-based hotel brands are upping their game together.
“Our brands complement each other extremely well, as do our organizations’ values and culture,” says Vikram Oberoi, CEO of the Oberoi Group. “For more than 80 years, we have been guided by one simple principle: the guest is everything. Our friends at Mandarin Oriental are no different with more than 50 years’ experience in luxury hospitality.”
Staff at both hotels will have access to each others’ training programs and more, “via cross-exposures and development exchanges between team members from both brands,” says James Riley, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s CEO.
The partnership also means added perks for fans of the brands. It includes a sort of reciprocal loyalty program, meaning that Oberoi One members who book stays at Mandarin Oriental properties and Fans of M.O. members who book at Oberoi hotels will get special upgrades. (Both loyalty programs are free to enroll in.) Book online through the special portals in your existing loyalty program, whether it’s Oberoi or Mandarin Oriental, for access to room upgrades based on availability, complimentary breakfast for two, free Wi-Fi, and a 10 percent discount on spa treatments. Member-exclusive events and deals are also a part of the new alliance between the two brand’s loyalty programs.
For all guests (loyalty members or not), Oberoi and Mandarin Oriental plan to offer joint culinary and wellness experiences, curated specifically through this partnership, over the coming years.
Beyond guest experience though, the alliance is expanding the reach of both brands, keeping travelers within the two hotel groups when they may have otherwise stayed elsewhere. There are Mandarin Oriental hotels in the U.S. and Europe, where Oberoi does not yet have properties, while Oberoi opens up India, Egypt, and Morocco, among other destinations to Mandarin Oriental guests.
The brands are expecting to roll out more information as the partnership takes shape in 2021, but loyalty program members already have access to all the new benefits.
