In 2015, Helen Crowley spent £25,000 on a caravan in Greece and would frequently visit it for months at a time. This has not been the case in the last year, however, as the COVID-19 pandemic has put a stop to most international travel.

As a result, Ms Crowley is asking Caravans in the Sun to give her a discount on her annual bill of £2,430.

She told Stoke-on-Trent Live: “I’m livid. It’s not our fault that we can’t go to Greece, I think it’s absolutely atrocious.

“I’d like a discount off this year’s ground rent or this year free.”

The caravan firm, based in Stoke-on-Trent, offers buyers and renters mobile homes in France, Spain, Portugal, Tenerife, Greece and Italy.

Ms Crowley’s is based in a rental ground named Alykes Camping in Zante, Greece.

The period in dispute is April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, with the cost covering the rent of the land and maintenance fees for the facilities, roads and gardens.

A spokesperson for Caravans in the Sun said: “It is always a matter of concern to Caravans in the Sun when a customer is dissatisfied for any reason and we have attempted to liaise with Ms Crowley since March 1, 2021 to provide an amicable solution.

“We appreciate the difficulties Covid-19 has presented and it has been an unprecedented year for individuals and businesses alike. However, Caravans in the Sun remains committed to complying with its legal obligations at all times while also providing the best possible service to its customers.”

The firm added that Alykes Camping has been open for residents and owners since last June, when Greece reopened tourism.

The spokesperson said: “We understand that the issues surrounding COVID-19 have caused financial issues for some clients. However, all other residents and mobile home owners have paid their 2021-22 fees and UK travel is expected to be permitted from May 17.

“There is currently a waiting list for vacant plots and mobile homes on this campsite.

“If it is the case that Ms Crowley is unable to pay the annual site fee and home ownership is no longer financially viable, then we can offer our services to advertise her mobile home for sale or we can arrange for the removal of the unit from the plot if she wishes to relocate the home elsewhere.
