A woman has been widely praised on Reddit for refusing to swap seats with a child on an eight hour flight. The woman posted the details of the incident on a popular forum.
She said she was on an eight hour flight and had booked herself an aisle seat “so I could get up without bothering others and a special meal due to health requirements”.
After the woman had boarded the flight and settled into her seat, a family asked her to swap seats so they could sit with their children. The woman said she initially agreed until she realised the family wanted her to swap her aisle seat for a middle seat. She then refused to swap seats.
The woman said: “Another passenger then gets up and says he has a seat in the back that I can move to and I said no. I said that I had booked my seat and ordered a dietary meal, and there was no way I was moving to a middle seat.
“He then starts loudly criticising me and saying he hopes I understand that I’m splitting a family up. This eventually attracts attention from the crew because it’s holding up boarding.”

Another passenger eventually switched seats so the family could be seated together on the flight. The woman said: “I didn’t think I was in the wrong here.
“I organised myself beforehand and booked my seat, and felt it was quite unfair to have a random guy criticising me to half the cabin for not wanting to swap to a middle seat for an eight hour flight.”
Many commenters on the Reddit forum agreed with the woman and said the family shouldn’t have expected her to switch her seat.

One said: “I can’t even tell you how many times families have asked me to switch seats with their children because they didn’t book their seats together in advance. I usually get guilted into switching because I don’t want to end up in situations like this!”
Another person said: “If travelling couples or families want to sit together, they must book their seats. It’s an epidemic of people getting on planes and expecting others, who planned their trips and booked their seats, to change to accommodate them. No way.”
Another person added: “I’m tired of people thinking someone should sacrifice for them. If they wanted to be seated together, they should’ve booked seats together.”
Seat issues can cause arguments and fights on some flights. Recently, a mum shared how she took revenge on a woman who wouldn’t swap seats with her child.
Although many airlines will seat passengers together even if they don’t book a seat, there’s one budget airline that’s really unlikely to do so.
Passengers will usually have to pay if they want to select a seat before check-in and this can be quite expensive.
