World’s most overcrowded destination has over 100 tourists to every resident

Enjoying some of the world’s top landmarks up close is one of the greatest joys of a holiday. However, it could be made slightly less enjoyable if there are hundreds of other tourists there as well.

Following the pandemic, tourists from all over the world have headed out on holidays. This has left some of the world’s top destinations feeling extremely crowded.

In the UK, Edinburgh Castle was named the world’s most overcrowded landmark, while a royal attraction took the top spot in England.

However, a new study from MoneyTransfers.com has revealed the most overcrowded tourist destinations in the world.

According to the team’s research, Phuket in Thailand is the most crowded tourist destination in the world. The Thai hotspot has 118 tourists to every local resident.

Phuket is one of Thailand’s leading beach destinations and is home to several of the world’s best beaches including Kata and Karon.

However, tourists could find the beaches overcrowded, particularly during peak season. Thailand was the busiest destination with Pattaya and Krabi also making the top 10.

Heraklion, one of Greece’s leading destinations, also made the overcrowded list with 22 tourists to every local resident.

Unsurprisingly, Venice made the top 10 and the Italian hotspot has a whopping 21 tourists to every resident. The city is planning to introduce a fee for tourists in an effort to combat crowds.

Rhodes also made the crowded list with over 20 tourists for every resident while Miami was the last spot on the list with 18 tourists to every local.
