Norwegian Cruise Line implemented stricter protocols on the Norwegian Breakaway after a South African crewmember tested positive for the Covid-19 omicron variant on a Nov. 28 sailing.

According to NCL, the ship “identified a handful of Covid-19 asymptomatic cases among guests and crew” while the Breakaway was sailing roundtrip from New Orleans.

One of those cases, a South African crew member who was in isolation for the entirety of the cruise, is suspected to have the omicron variant, NCL said.

NCL said that “in an abundance of caution and in compliance with CDC requirements” it offered all guests on the next sailing, the Dec. 5 cruise, the opportunity to cancel without penalty. Those who opt to sail “must wear masks while indoors except while actively eating or drinking and will be tested twice during the cruise.”

NCL requires 100% of guests and crew to be fully vaccinated.
