The Discovery Princess set off on its maiden voyage Sunday to the Mexican Riviera from the Port of Los Angeles.

The 3,660-guest Discovery expands Princess’ fleet to 15 ships. Built at the Fincantieri yard in Monfalcone, Italy, the Discovery is the sixth and final ship in the line’s Royal class.

Princess president John Padgett welcomed the ship’s first guests, frequent guests Michael and Sally Smith, on board with a special ceremony Sunday. The pair have been sailing with Princess Cruises for 10 years.

The ship is equipped with Princess’ signature MedallionClass technology, allowing guests to don a wearable, quarter-sized device that enables contactless boarding, unlocking the cabin door, locating traveling companions on the ship and having drinks delivered right to them, among other uses.

The ship features 270-degree views from the line’s largest balcony in its luxury Sky Suites that accommodate up to five guests.

The Discovery also offers original production shows, 25 bars and restaurants, live jazz and a series of pools: two deep-tank pools, an infinity-style pool and bar with a view of the horizon and a retreat pool offering a quiet experience.

The Discovery will sail a series of Mexican Riviera and California Coast voyages from March 27 until April 24 before it shifts north to begin seven-day Alaska cruises from Seattle.

The ship’s naming ceremony will take place at the Port of Los Angeles on April 29. Terri Cybuliak, the Sky Princess’ hotel general manager, was named the Discovery Princess godmother.
