Overnight experiences

  • Wolf-focused indigenous experience in British Columbia, Canada

A new, exclusive tour in Canada, this forms a part of its focus on Indigenous Canadian culture.

One to make the heart skip a beat: this three-day private experience is wolf-focused, with two nights camping in the traditional territory of the Tlatlasikwala First Nation in British Columbia. Clients travel with their indigenous guides, looking for sea (or coastal) wolves by boat and on land. Smaller than their grey wolf cousins and with noticeably red-tinted coats, these wolves are only found between the coastlines and islands of Southwestern Alaska and Vancouver Island and have adapted to a diet of around 90 per cent seafood.

Visitors can fall asleep, or wake, to the sound of howls between pack members, spot their tracks across the beaches, and wait patiently for them to slip out from the dense forest to forage along the beaches. The experience, designed to be intimate with room for only six guests and two guides, is exclusively available through Audley Travel and can be booked on selected dates in May through to August 2023 as part of a tailormade trip to Canada.

A nine-day tailormade trip to Canada, including two nights on the wolf tour as well as two nights in Port Hardy and three nights in Vancouver costs from £5,280 per person (based on two sharing) and includes flights, transfers, accommodation and excursions.

Tours focus on Amanohashidate and include taking in the view of the iconic sea bridge from the top of Kasamatsu Park and visiting Motoise Kono Shrine (said to be where sake was first offered to the gods). Last week Dartmoor National Park was able to negotiate a deal with landowners to allow people to wild camp on their land. The park will pay the owners an undisclosed sum to allow campers after a landmark judgement found there was no existing right for campers to set up tents without permission from landowners.

However, many campaigners remain unhappy with the agreement as landowners could withdraw permission at any time.

But while Dartmoor was the only place in England where it was possible to wild camp, some countries’ laws are a lot more relaxed when it comes to getting back to nature.

Scotland

Luckily for English campers, they only need to cross the Scottish border to camp without restrictions.

The 2003 Land Reform Act gives campers the right to wild camp on most unenclosed land, although there are a few exceptions.

Due to overcrowding, campers can only camp within campsites or with a permit at Loch Lomond & The Trossachs national park.

In other areas, campers will need to use a stove rather than an open fire where possible and keep fires under control.

If they want to camp near houses, they should ask nearby residents and take care of toilet hygiene.

Wild campers will need to leave the land as they found it and should avoid digging or removing vegetation to pitch their tent.

Sweden

The Scandinavian country operates under the policy of ‘allemansrätten’ which gives everyone the right to roam the countryside in peace and quiet.

Visit Sweden said: “The Right of Public Access is a unique right to roam freely in the countryside. So come to Sweden and claim your right to enjoy the sights and sounds of Sweden’s great outdoors.”

People can access any land except private residences, put up a tent and collect flowers, mushrooms or berries.

Swimming in lakes is also allowed while people can access any beach as long as they stay away from private residences.

Norway

Norway allows people to wild camp for two days without permission as long as they aren’t in a motorised camper.

France

Wild camping is allowed in some areas but people could face a fine for doing so in national parks or on beaches.

In 2022, two tourists were slapped with a fine after they broke the rules and were chased up a tree by a belligerent wild boar.

After they called for help, they were fined for breaking France’s camping rules and the boar made a speedy exit.

Spain

Wild camping is permitted in some areas in Spain but this is managed by local, not national laws.

Parts of Catalonia, the Basque Country, Madrid, Castilla y Leon and Castilla La Mancha allow it.

Tourists will need to check the regional laws before attempting to wild camp in Spain as they could be fined.

Wild campers should always make sure to leave no trace of their presence and use an inconspicuous tent.

Planning a winter staycation? A stunning attraction in Wales could be the perfect spot for adventurous British tourists.

Explore Worldwide researched over 350 hidden gems around the world to find the most underrated spots.

Most underrated experiences in Europe

  1. Hiking Schafberg Peak (Salzburg, Austria)
  2. Cynghordy Viaduct Walk (Llanfair-ar-y-Bryn, Wales)
  3. Jokkmokks Fjalltrafgard Botanic Garden (Jokkmokks, Sweden)
  4. Boat Tour of the Streets of Giethoorn (Overijssel, Netherlands)
  5. Hike to Sandwood Bay (Northern Highlands, Scotland)
  6. Rafting in Osumi Canon (Berat, Albania)
  7. Visiting Blakeney Point National Nature Reserve (Norfolk, England)
  8. Hiking to the Adrspach- Teplice Rocks (NE Bohemia, Czech Republic)
  9. Soca River Rafting (Western Slovenia)
  10. Hiking the Massif de l’Esterel (Agay, France)

Cynghordy Viaduct Walk in Wales was named as the second most underrated travel experience in Europe.

The 18 arch viaduct traverses the Bran Valley and was built in 1868 for the Central Wales Railway.

The railway bridge is over 305m long and is 33m high. It became a Grade II listed structure in 1966.

Tourists can walk the viaduct in a two mile route and will enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding hills and countryside.

A visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: “Absolutely stunning and well worth a visit. My partner knew about this landmark and wanted to go so we made a small detour out to the middle of nowhere and suddenly this magnificent structure appeared.

“Pictures don’t convey the unassuming majesty of this incredible sight.”

Another tourist said: “Stunning set of railway arches – similar to the famous Scottish one in the Harry Potter films, but here you won’t find the tourist hordes, only quiet fields of cows!”

Blakeney Point National Nature Reserve also made the top 10 list and the Norfolk attraction is well worth a visit.

Home to seals, the stunning nature reserve is managed by the National Trust and has incredible coastline views.

Norfolk’s unique natural environment includes saltmarshes, hills and freshwater grazing marshes.

The region is a favourite of the Royal Family, who regularly visit for holidays at the Sandringham estate.

Michael Edwards, Managing Director at Explore Travel commented: “This study has been quite an undertaking and researching over 350 underrated travel experiences has given our researchers some major wanderlust.

“We’re all about advocating lesser-known adventures off the beaten track, and we’re pleased to be able to shine a light on experiences that have clearly left a wonderful impression on those who have tried them, but which aren’t very well known about amongst the majority of travellers.

“We hope our research encourages people to try something a little different the next time they travel.”

The best rated experience in Europe was a hike at Schafberg Peak in Salzburg in Austria.

Sunlife found the best spots in the UK for campervans by looking at the number of campsites, fuel prices and vehicle offences. The team also looked at the happiness levels for each destination.

Best campervan spots in the UK

  1. Highlands
  2. Cornwall
  3. Gloucestershire
  4. Dorset
  5. Devon
  6. Lincolnshire
  7. Cumbria
  8. East Sussex
  9. Pembrokeshire
  10. Somerset

The Highlands was rated the number one spot for campervans in the UK with an overall score of 70.

A little quieter than some of the other popular spots, roads are generally far less busy in the Highlands.

Visitors might want to travel to Glencoe Mountain, a gorgeous mount with hiking in summer and skiing in winter.

One visitor said: “Never ceases to amaze me, the stunning beauty of this place. I never tire of here.”

Rules on wild camping are also far more relaxed in Scotland than in the rest of the UK. In England the only permitted wild camping spot is Dartmoor National Park.

Visit Scotland advises: “Wild camping is legal in Scotland but there are guidelines that all campers should follow.

“It really is quite a simple formula, respecting the country and being safe equals happy wild camping!”

Wild campers will need to leave the camp as they found it and ask permission from residents if they want to camp near houses.

They will also have to avoid sites that are at risk of overuse and take extra care with toilet hygiene.

Wild campers should never light an open fire during a prolonged dry period or in areas such as forests and woods.

Cornwall was ranked as the second best spot for campervans in the UK and travellers will be rewarded with a stunning coastline.

Pembrokeshire topped the rankings in Wales and hosts many tourists each year who come to explore the coast.

Best of the rest

11) Gwynedd
12) Herefordshire
13) Moray
14) Powys
15) Shropshire
16) Ceredigion
17) Northumberland
18) Monmouthshire
19) Suffolk
20) Dumfries and Galloway
