MSC Cruises' second World-class ship to be named MSC World America: Travel Weekly
MSC Cruises is proving its dedication to the U.S. market by naming its next ship the MSC World America.
The World America’s steel-cutting ceremony took place Monday at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France, marking the beginning of construction of the line’s second World-class ship.
At the same ceremony, the shipyard delivered MSC’s first World-class ship, the MSC World Europa.
“MSC World America is a testament to our ambitious growth plans in the U.S. and the Caribbean and further solidifies MSC Cruises as a major player in the North American market with another of our largest, most glamorous ships coming to the region,” said Ruben Rodriguez, president of MSC Cruises USA.
The U.S.-inspired name comes as MSC shifts its fleet to base five ships in the U.S.
MSC said the World America will offer a “futuristic cruise experience” with a new design, unique dining experiences and vibrant onboard entertainment. The ship will share many of the same elements as the Europa, but some of the ship’s design will wave directly at a North American audience, the line said.
The 22-deck ship will have the capacity for 5,200 passengers at double occupancy and more than 420,000 square feet of public space.
The Europa, which debuts Dec. 20, features a Y-shaped aft and a 350-foot-long World Promenade. Balcony cabins overlook the World Promenade and offer a view of The Venom Drop, a slide that spans 11 decks. The slide will be the longest at sea, edging past Norwegian Cruise Line’s The Drop on the Norwegian Prima, which stretches 10 decks.
The Europa’s naming ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 13 in Doha, Qatar. The ship will sail seven-night cruises to Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas Island and Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
