Airlines avoiding Afghanistan's airpace

Airlines are diverting routes to avoid Afghanistan airspace. 

United, the only the U.S. carrier that normally flies over Afghanistan, has rerouted its flights to India following the Taliban takeover of the capital of Kabul on Sunday. 

“We will continue to work closely with the FAA and IATA to evaluate the situation and determine how we continue service to markets impacted,” the carrier said. 

Other global carriers are also rerouting flights following an announcement Monday by the Afghanistan Civil Aviation Authority that Kabul airspace has been “released to the military,” media sources, including Al-Jazeera and Reuters, reported.

The chaos in Kabul has also caused the suspension of commercial flights to the city.
