Popular road trips may not be suitable for pets. Finding dog-friendly accommodations, restaurants, attractions and walking trails and easy access to vets can make planning a road trip this summer a headache for Britons.

To help with the research, a new survey by tails.com has looked at popular road trips and scored them for their dog-friendliness.

Edinburgh to Kirkwall is the UK’s most dog-friendly road trip in the UK.

Over the four main stops, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and Kirkwall, there are 336 dog-friendly Airbnbs, 90 vets and 72 dog-friendly restaurants.

With 220 walking trails and eight dog-friendly activities, the route is a fantastic option for both owners and pets.

In second place, the Atlantic Highway also has four main stops, Barnstaple, Bude, Exmoor National Park and Newquay.

In third place, Oxford to Wye Valley has stops at Oxford, the Cotswolds, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Ross-on-Wye.

The Plymouth to Southampton road trip also offers many dog-friendly opportunities.

The road takes in Plymouth, Dartmoor National Park, Exeter, Dorchester, Bournemouth, New Forest and Southampton.

In fifth, Royal Deeside Tourist Route stops at Perth, Blairgowrie, Aboyne and Aberdeen.

The research reveals 60 percent of families plan their holidays around their pets and 75 percent of families will take a road trip in the next year.

On the list of most dog-friendly road trips in Europe, five out of the ten road trips listed are in the UK.

Proving that a staycation is a worthy option for the entire family, the UK offers many fantastic dog-friendly attractions.

Of note, Exmoor National Park is “the ultimate dogs adventure playground’ with moorland, woodland and rivers,” the research says.

Travelling with a pet should not be a problem, but as with all travel, some preparations are needed.

To help pet owners with their planning, trails.com asked Head Vet Sean for tips.

Britons should make sure they have their pets’ passports with them, and vaccinations should be up to date.

A pet car seat or a dog seatbelt are the easiest ways to abide by the Highway Code, which requires dogs to be restrained when travelling in a moving car.

Planning for multiple rest stops, bagging treats and water, and packing a raincoat and cooling jacket are some of the other tips that will make a dog-friendly road trip a success.
