Cheapest European destination for 2023 is ‘a hidden gem’ – and it’s not Spain

The city of Porto, in Portugal, is a stunning destination known for its historic charm and vibrant attractions.

British tourists can visit the iconic Dom Luis I Bridge with views of the Douro River, the Clérigos Church and Tower and the picturesque Ribeira District with its colorful streets.

Another must-see is Porto’s renowned port wine cellars, and tourists will be glad to know that the average price for a cocktail in the city is only three euros.

Accommodation in the Portuguese town can be around 43 euros per night and an average meal costs just 15 euros per person.

A traveller on Tripadvisor commented: “I loved Porto and found it cheap, prices are very reasonable for eating and shopping. It’s a great town and I wished that we had stayed there more time.”

Dhermi, Albania

Albania may not be the most popular summer destination in Europe but according to travel experts, the city of Dhermi is “a hidden gem nestled along the breathtaking Albanian Riviera”.

The picturesque coastal village offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a budget-friendly summer break.

There are some stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters nearby and British tourists will certainly enjoy the Mediterranean and Albanian cuisine and affordable accommodation. Dhermi is “the perfect choice for a relaxing and culturally enriching summer break,” the travel experts said.

A meal in Dhermi costs around 12 euros per person and coffee costs two euros on average.

On Tripadvisor, a visitor said: “Bodrum isn’t expensive, food in most restaurants is reasonably priced but there are exceptions as with anywhere. Drinks, however, vary dramatically, especially alcoholic ones.”
