A passenger has divided opinion after she shared an image on Reddit from a recent plane journey. The photo shows both the passenger’s neighbours with their feet spread into her foot space.

The woman was sitting in the plane’s middle seat, but both the window and aisle passenger spread their feet into her foot space.

Both of her neighbours had one foot in the passenger’s foot space, something which some commenters said was “disrespectful”.

One person said: “What kind of entitled self absorbed p* does not understand to stay within their own space?”

A commenter who said they worked as a flight attendant also stuck up for the angry passenger.

They said: “You’re already in the uncomfortable middle, this is just disrespectful and an invasion of space!

“If you feel uncomfortable saying something, next time let the flight attendant know, we will help you!”

However, not everyone was as sympathetic with one commenter questioning why the woman didn’t do anything.

They said: “So did you say anything or just accept your fate, making the other person think it’s ok to do that?”

Another added: “I don’t understand why people don’t speak up. If the other person says no, then they can chat with a flight attendant about it.”

Generally the area under the seat in front belongs to the passenger and neighbours are expected not to spread out their feet.

The middle passenger is also entitled to use both armrests as they don’t have the window to lean against.

The aisle seat is generally the most comfortable position for taller passengers as there is more room to spread out.

Despite the middle seat being a less than attractive prospect for most passengers, one expert told Express.co.uk passengers have a better chance of getting a free upgrade.

Jacob Wedderburn-Day, CEO of Stasher, said: “If you don’t like the uncertainty of waiting until a few hours before your flight to check in, then make sure to select the middle seat.

“Airlines are more likely to upgrade passengers who are sitting in the middle seat as this is generally considered the least desirable place to sit.

“So, if you don’t mind being wedged between two other people, it might pay off to book those seats.”

Some passengers have said that ‘manspreading’ is responsible for middle seat space invasion.

Added to the dictionary in 2015, manspreading is when men spread out their legs on public transport or in other tight spaces.

This can give other passengers far less room and several photos of ‘manspreaders’ have gone viral on social media.

‘Manspreaders’ typically take up more than one seat with their legs, squeezing other passengers into uncomfortable positions.
