Healthcare is a hot topic at the moment amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. In a ranking of the happiest countries in the world, experts have concluded there is a significant link between the access to universal healthcare and overall happiness.

For Britons looking to embark on expat life, this overall happiness could be a driving factor in deciding where to relocate.

According to data from the World Happiness Report, Finland ranks as the country whose citizens are the “happiest”.

The nation has a happiness ranking of 7.8, marking it as the “happiest country in the world”.

This is down to a number of factors including life expectancy, freedom, financial aspects and levels of corruption.

Upon closer inspection, experts from Lenstore have concluded this could be linked to the accessibility and quality of healthcare in the country.

The nation scored 89.6 for its healthcare offering.

However, while Finland may be the happiest country, it was Iceland which came out on top for healthcare accessibility.

The nation ranks fourth on the World Happiness Report, however, achieved a score of 93.6 for its healthcare offering.

In terms of overall happiness, Denmark came in second place, achieving a score of 7.6.

For healthcare access and quality, the nation achieved a score of 85.7

It was joined by Switzerland, which also scored a Happiness Index score of 7.6.

Other nations to feature in the top 10 happiest countries include Norway, Netherlands, Sweden, New Zealand, Austria and Canada.

However, experts from Lenstore also highlighted Spain, Luxembourg and Japan for their high levels of healthcare access.

Spain scored 89.6 – the same as “happiest” nation Finland – for the accessibility and quality of its healthcare services in relation to citizen contentment.

Meanwhile, Luxembourg scored 89.3 and Japan 89.0.

While the UK did not make it into the top 10 list of “happiest countries”, it did make it into the top 20.

The UK was ranked by the World Happiness Index as the 15th happiest country.

Furthermore, it was commended by the Lenstore global healthcare report for its “accessibility to healthcare.”

The nation was also cited as having a high life expectancy.

The Lenstore report states: “Our study shows that healthcare in the United Kingdom is one of the most accessible in the world, as well as being one of the highest in terms of quality.

“With the overall happiness of Brits at 7.2, an excellent healthcare system, and a high life expectancy (72.5 years), it’s easy to see how health has a positive impact on happiness.”
