Going on a spa getaway is a great holiday option. But for Britons without the time, a spa day is the next best thing.

AQVA has looked at cities all over the UK to find the best for a spa day.

And taking the crown was Durham.

The northern city famed for its cathedral has seven spas per 50,000 people.

On Tripadvisor, the top rated spa in Durham was Rockliffe Hotel Spa.

Joshtravel said: “We visited the spa as part of our stay. My partner had two treatments over two days, the Body Bliss with Erin which was amazing and really helped her with all her aches and pains! And also had a facial with Naomi which must have been good as she made me buy all the products in the shop for her!

“The spa area itself has two great pools, one a length pool and one hydrotherapy pool, they weren’t busy 90 percent of the time and even when busy it was still a great experience due to the size.

“We also used the spa garden which is an added extra and it comes with use of fluffy towels and gowns and use of herbal teas and hot drinks, it has a great infinity pool and seating area to relax so definitely worth the added extra.

“Our favourite spa and much needed after all these lockdowns.”

Durham is also perfectly located to head to luxury five star Seaham Hall, making the city one of the best place to visit for a spa break.

On Tripadvisor, Siobhan B said: “Had a wonderful stay at Seaham Hall and Serenity Spa this weekend.

“We loved the vortex architectural art installation outside which was mind-blowing night and day.

“We also loved the tunnel from the hotel to the spa. Magical.

“The spa itself is huge and serene with plenty to do as well as having treatments.

“We visited the stunningly rugged heritage beach a couple of minutes away but we also drove less than half an hour to pay Newcastle a quick visit as we had never been.

“If you are looking for a relaxing 5-star break, I’m not sure you could find much better.”

The UK city with the most spas was found to be Newquay.

With 14 spas per 50,000 residents, Newquay takes the crown of pampering city.

On Tripadvisor, Fistral Spa is the top rated spa in Newquay.

Amethyst40 said: “A wonderful afternoon escape here. The pool was never busy, had the Jacuzzi to myself, and the sauna and steam room were a plus.

“The included afternoon tea was a real treat.”
