‘I went to the world’s most beautiful beach and it was breathtaking’

Anse Source D’Argent on La Digue island in the Seychelles is often described as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches by the World’s 50 Best Beaches. I was lucky enough to travel to the beach last autumn as part of a trip to the gorgeous Seychelles islands.

La Digue island, reachable by boat from Praslin Island, has a laid-back atmosphere and the majority of tourists and residents travel around by bike, hopping between beach bars and cafes.

There’s a breathtaking beach everywhere you turn in Seychelles but as soon as I set foot on Anse Source D’Argent with its white sands, shallow clear water, granite boulders and coconut palms, it was easy to see why it’s one of the world’s most photographed beaches.

The beach is part of the L’Union estate so you do have to pay to access it but I would say it’s absolutely worth it. It costs around £8 to access the estate and tourists can also see its giant tortoises within the price.

I’d recommend hiring a bike at the port and riding the short journey to the beach, stopping at one of the cafes for a cool drink along the way. However, there’s one spot in particular where you can take in the full, panoramic beauty of the beach.

While it’s great to feel the sand between your toes, in my opinion, you get the best Anse Source D’Argent experience taking to the water.

On a Crystal Clear Kayak tour, you sit in a see-through kayak to tour the bay. My guide was fantastic and took us to lesser-seen areas of the beach.

Sitting on the water is also the best way to admire the beach’s granite boulders and see some of the incredible marine life and coral.

Unsurprisingly Anse Source D’Argent can get crowded so the best time to see the beach at its unspoiled best is early in the morning. However, despite its fame, the beach actually wasn’t that busy when I visited in November and there were plenty of spots to take a seat on the sand.

While Anse Source D’Argent is a must-see, the Seychelles has plenty of less famous beaches that are well worth seeing. Many hotels have access to their own beach and I loved how shaded the sand is by natural palms.

I’d recommend visiting Anse Lazio in Praslin island or heading to some wilder spots on Mahe island.

While tropical beaches often top the global rankings, this year Iceland’s Reynisfjara black sand beach took the top spot. While it’s not the place for sunbathing, the volcanic beach’s wild beauty takes some beating.

Prefer the UK’s beaches? My personal favourite is Studland Bay, a National Trust managed beach on the Dorset coast. Its golden sand is some of the softest I’ve found in the UK.

I’ve not had the chance to explore Northumberland’s coastline yet but there’s one beach that’s consistently ranked among the best in the UK.
