‘I’m a hotel manager – there are free toiletries guests should never use’

Going on holiday is generally exciting. One of the only things that makes it more of a chore is having to pack – especially figuring out which liquids to take in your carry on.

The rules in the UK state that you can only have one litre of liquids divided into 100ml bottles. While this is set to change by next year it sees many of us opting to leave the shampoo at home.

For most of us, it’s a relief that hotel offer miniature toiletries or large wall-bound bottles so that we can at least use shower gel and shampoo while away. But, a hotel manager has actually warned tourists that there are some items from the amenities kit you should avoid.

The TikTok creator, @travelinghotelmanager, went viral for her video where she explained why. The expert noted that you should avoid using the shampoo, body wash and conditioner.

In the caption she said: “Don't ever use these in hotels. Trust me! When you check into your room and you go into your shower and you see [shampoo bottles], they are usually full size. We have shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.”

She added: "Here's your tip: Don't ever use these." The hotelier unscrewed the top of a shampoo bottle and offered her explanation.

The hotel manager said: "Why? Because they are not secure. These can come off and the previous guest can put anything they want in there.

"They can put hair colour, bleach, anything in these, don't ever use these." While it would be unusual to experience tampering you don’t want to risk it.

Thankfully, many hotels in Europe and the UK offer mini bottles of product which often come sealed. Sealed products are safe to use.

The hotel manager suggested bringing your own toiletries, but if you don’t have room you can usually find cheap options to buy at the local supermarket or use pre-sealed free amenities.

In the video she commented: "If you don't bring your own, go down to the front desk and ask for a fresh set or even the mini ones. Don't ever ever use these. Trust me."

In the comments, she noted that more people tamper with the products than viewers could expect – and that hair remover had even been added to one once. Hundreds of people responded.

One man noted that he’d never seen the communal bottled unlocked. The manager replied: "Depends on the type and brand of the hotel and their brand standards!"

A woman named Sarah wrote: "I miss the days of the minis being the standard. I hate the shared bottles."

While Pam added: "New fear unlocked." A lass named Angel said: "I hear people have also put bodily fluids."

Another commenter joked: "With all due respect… I don’t think we go to the same hotels. I barely get any shampoo much more the full BOTTLE."

While Greggy said: "I’ve always thought this toooo! I always bring my own and tell my loved ones not use them haha."

Depending on the hotel, some brands of shampoo can also dry out your hair. So if you’ve spent time and money keeping it in good condition it’s best to bring your own products.
