‘I’m a travel presenter – I have a ‘refresher’ kit I always pack for flights’

When going on holiday it can be tricky to feel properly rested. Heading to the airport early, stressing about security and travelling thousands of miles can be tiring.

There are some ways to reduce the frustration of the hours before reaching your holiday destination. And, we don’t mean a pint at the airport!

TV and travel presenter Hayley Sparkes has worked in the industry for 13 years. The 40-year-old from Essex has travelled all over the world for work – even waking up at 4am and working 16 hour days while abroad – so she knows a thing or two about how to reduce travel stress and have a great trip.

Hayley told the Daily Star: "As a TV presenter I have been to Taiwan, Mauritius, Belgium, Turkey, Paris, Italy, Ibiza, to name a few. As a luxury travel writer, model and influencer, I have also had gifted trips from hotels and retreats in countries including Bali and Portugal. Instead of focusing on the tiredness I try to change my mindset, you just have to power through."

Hayley told the Daily Star her top three tips for making travel easier. While flying business or first class could help – these will work just as well if you’re going economy.

Her first tip? Invest in some packing cubes. She explained: "Packing Cubes are really popular right now, they are a great way to keep your clothes crease free, save space and keep all of your holiday items super organised. Compression packing cubes take space saving to another level."

Once you're all packed, there's often a pre-airport fear as to whether you'll stick to those pesky weight limits. However, Hayley recommends a trick to get rid of the stress.

She said: "The flight luggage allowance is often a struggle for me as for my job it is hard to travel light. To avoid any additional charges or stress at the airport, it is worth investing in some digital luggage scales, you can pick them up for as little as £4.99 on amazon. It will take all the guess work out of how much your case weighs."

Of course what you pack in your hand luggage can also make all the difference to your comfort levels on a flight. Hayley commented: "To ensure I feel fresh coming off a long haul flight, I always pack a little refresher kit in my hand luggage. I pop a couple of natural based make-up wipes in a sandwich bag, along with cotton buds for any smudged mascara and a tiny pot of moisturiser and coconut oil.

"Coconut oil is a must have for me, you can use it as a lip balm, to smooth frizzy hair and as a moisturiser. Sensory Retreats self heating eye masks are also an essential to help me get to sleep or just rest on the flight, they gently warm up on your eye lids and the sensation is dreamy.

"I find them really comforting. They also come with a lovely meditation that help me to calm my mind." You can pick up the Sensory Retreats eye masks for around £3.95 a mask online.

Hayley now works with Not Just Travel / The Travel Franchise, to help people retrain to become travel agents working from home. The job can be done from anywhere in the world. hayleysparkes.co.uk.
