London has been named one of the world’s best 100 cities for 2023

A study has named the world’s top 100 city destinations for holidaymakers who want to make the most of a break away. Luckily for the UK tourism industry one British hotspot even made the top 10.

The Euromonitor research looked at 55 different metrics across six key areas to figure out which cities were the top destinations for travellers in 2023. It looked at economic and business performance, tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, health and safety, and sustainability.

London, the capital city of England, came in at number 10 out of 100 – which we think is a pretty belting result for the UK. London is full of fun things to do from incredible shows in the West End to ballet, opera and art exhibitions.

Of course, those who love to learn can head to many of the city’s museums like the Victoria & Albert, the Natural History Museum, the Tate Modern and the Transport Museum. Some of which are even totally free to enter. Meanwhile anyone after a true dose of history can visit the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral and the fascinating Churchill War Rooms. Plus, the scaffolding has finally been taken off the Elizabeth Tower (commonly referred to as Big Ben – incorrectly of course).

You can also take a look at the city from the heights of The Shard or on the London Eye, walk around beautiful parks like Hyde Park and Battersea Park or head over to the river for a quick Thames boat journey for just a few quid.

Ahead of Christmas there’s also tonnes of shopping to be done at shops like Hamleys, Harrods and Selfridges. Visitors can also get stuck into big festive events like Winter Wonderland and Kew Gardens Light Trail.

But, as wonderful as London is, it wasn’t the top spot. That went to our friends over the channel as Paris was named the best city in the world. The city is projected to record over 15 million international arrivals in 2023.

Plus, in 2024, the Olympic Games will drive millions of people towards Paris. While the French capital has been slammed by some holidaymakers – who say it smells and has bad food – it’s still got plenty going for it.

Visitors can see some of the most famous art in the world at the Louvre or visit gorgeous monuments like the Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur and Notre Dame. There’s the fun Moulin Rouge for anyone who wants a bohemian style show and dinner.

Stunning free gardens like the Jardin du Luxembourg, Tuileries Farden and Jardin des Planets are top spots for picnics (with wine of course). Plus, fans of TV show Emily in Paris can spot all her haunts from the series.

Making up the top three cities in the world was Dubai, in the UAE, and Madrid, in Spain. Dubai was well rated for being highly advanced while the Spanish capital has an exceptional performance in terms of sustainability. Tokyo, in Japan, and Amsterdam, in the Netherlands made up the top five cities.

The only other UK city to make the top 100 was Edinburgh at a respectable 62. Cardiff fans, Manchester enthusiasts, Liverpool supporters and Birmingham defenders as well as those from Leeds, York or Belfast will be saddened to hear that they did not make the top 100.
