Now that travel restrictions are lifting, many people are keen to get back on the water and take a cruise holiday. Paul Melinis, Managing Director of APT cruises spoke to Express.co.uk about safety tips to take on a cruise.
Paul said: “Anyone nervous about cruising post-Covid might like to consider a river cruise.”
River cruises are a very popular holiday option on the Danube with regular stops including Vienna and Budapest.
Another river cruise option is the Douro river in Portugal which offers guests the chance to sample local wines.
Paul said: “With smaller ships and plenty of space for every person onboard, as well as fewer other guests than our ocean-faring cousins, and more time spent ashore, it might be just the holiday to get you back onboard.”
Far smaller than ocean liners, river cruises could give Covid-nervous passengers more peace of mind away from crowds.
Paul also recommended small ship sailing for cautious passengers. APT is launching a new Adriatic cruise on MV Lady Eleganza in 2022.
Paul said: “With just 18 cabins it’s like chartering your own yacht without the price tag. You could even take it over with your own private travel bubble of family and friends.”
Small ship sailing also allows passengers to explore smaller ports and visit less crowded areas.
Another cruising tip for nervous passengers is to choose a provider that offers trusted local guides at each stop.
Paul told Express.co.uk that a local guide can make all the difference to a post-pandemic cruise trip.
He said: “You know that the restaurants and attractions you are visiting meet the right levels of hygiene to keep you safe, so you can relax and enjoy your holiday to the fullest.
“We work with our partners to ensure the highest levels of sanitation and hygiene practices are met.”
Anyone nervous about cruising during Covid is also advised to book a trip with a provider that offers some flexibility.
It’s also a good idea to buy Covid inclusive insurance to make sure passengers are covered in case of emergency.
Paul added that enjoying a “dream holiday” requires passengers to be sure crew and staff are healthy and Covid free.
Choosing a provider that regularly tests crew staff will give passengers the peace of mind they need.
Cruise providers should also offer passengers updated Covid advice and regulations for each destination.
Different countries may have their own regulations in place so it’s good to know the rules about face masks and distancing before disembarking.
For example, tourists visiting France will need to show a double-vaccination health passport before visiting restaurants or attractions.
Tourists thinking of booking a cruise holiday can also check the Government website for guidance and advice.
