Everyone in the UK seems to be heading to the same spots this summer, as the country opts for staycations instead of trying to navigate the restrictions of an overseas holiday. A staycation is on the cards for most Britons, but the prospect of overcrowded destinations can be daunting.

While most holidaymakers will go to tried and tested spots that are sure to offer everything they want and need, some may wish to go off-grid and explore more of the country without having to run into their neighbours at the beach.

PaulCamper, Europe’s largest online platform for motorhome and campervan sharing, has released its list of off-grid destinations and it may offer good alternatives for Britons who wish to switch off their phones and head out to the wilderness.

Steven Hagenah, UK Country Lead for PaulCamper said: “The Great British staycation is firmly back, and after so long stuck indoors and juggling video calls, social media and TV streaming, there’s no better time to get in a campervan or motorhome, hit the open road, and explore the great outdoors.”

He continued: “Camping provides the best opportunities to truly unwind, de-stress and enjoy the peace and rejuvenating effects of the great outdoors and all it has to offer with its nature and wildlife.”

Ettrick, Scotland
On the Scottish border, Ettrick valley doesn’t attract as many tourists as the rest of Scotland.

Hiking, horse riding, fishing, cycling, mountain biking, watersports and paragliding are all activities that can be done right there in the Ettrick Valley.

Alwinton, Northumberland
Alwinton Car Park is a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site, which means the area is a great place for stargazing.

The village of Alwinton is located at the head of the Coquet valley and offers holidaymakers a range of activities, from riverside walking and Border Ridge walks to horse riding and mountain biking.

At the centre of village life is a pub, the Rose and Thistle, meaning holidaymakers will still be able to get a drink and chat with locals on their off-grid staycations.

Rosedale Abbey, Yorkshire
Right in the middle of the Yorkshire Moors National Park, Rosedale Abbey is the perfect spot for a little bit of peace and quiet.

With beautiful landscapes and a long and interesting history, Rosedale Abbey is a great destination for a walking holiday.

Stonybreck, Fair Isle
The most remote inhabited island in the UK, holidaymakers cannot go more off-grid than Stonybreck. The island lies 24 miles from the Shetland Mainland and 27 miles from North Ronaldsay, Orkney islands.

Apart from leaving all other UK tourists behind and truly heading to the great outdoors, Stonybreck also offers visitors great bird watching opportunities.

The island is an important breeding ground for seabirds and a stop-off point for migrant species.

Eskdale Valley, Lake District
Holidaymakers wanting to go to the Lake District but experience it without all the hustle and bustle of tourism can head to Eskdale Valley.

Stretching from Gosforh near Seascale on the West Coast of Cumbria through to the foot of Hardknott Pass, the valley is known for being one of the few valleys in the Lake District not to have its own lake.

An ancient mill, art galleries, waterfalls, several pubs and great walking opportunities more than make up for the lack of a lake.

A staycation gives holidaymakers a great opportunity to discover some of the hidden gems of the country.

Heading to an off-grid destination this summer will provide caravanning Britons a chance to escape the crowds, completely unplug and immerse themselves in the great outdoors, without having to share the great views and the fresh air with everyone else.
