The ‘dreamy’ and underrated town in Spain where Spanish people go on holiday

The pretty little village of Calella de Palafrugell is one of the most charming towns in the Mediterranean, and a favourite summer destination among Catalans.

Located in Costa Brava, Catalonia, Calella is just one and a half hours away from Barcelona, but you can also fly there. The closest airport is Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO), although renting a car is a must if you want to visit the area.

The fishing town is according to Oliverstravels blog, “one of the most beautiful coastal villages in Spain”. They explained: “With its white houses, wooden boats on the beach, rocky inlets and hidden coves, there’s a dream-like atmosphere that you won’t be able to put your finger on.

“And in the centre of town, there’s a livelihood that’s met through a selection of waterside cafes, restaurants serving up delicious Catalonian food and a market featuring meat and local fresh fruit and veggies.”

Other dreamy towns to visit around the area are Pals, Cadaqués, L’Escala and Begur.

But what is there to do in Calella de Palafrugell?

Port Bo Beach

Port Bo Beach, surrounded by charming fishermen’s homes and filled with colourful boats, is Calella de Palafrugell’s main beach, and the perfect location to sunbathe and relax.

Other beautiful beaches with turquoise water and golden sand are Malaespina, El Canadell, Platgeta and Port Pelegrí, where amazing cliffs and hidden coves await you in the surrounding area.

Old Town

The small old town has a special charm, especially Les Voltes and La Gravina, where pink bougainvilleas decorate the white facades.

Visit the church of Sant Pere, and get lost in the maze of streets filled with souvenir shops and cute cafes.

The Lighthouse

The San Sebastian de Llafranc lighthouse was built in the 19th century and is still the most powerful on the Catalan coast.

Enjoy traditional Catalan food and delicious seafood at El Far, an idyllic restaurant with wonderful views located next to the lighthouse.

Cap Roig Botanical Gardens

The Cap Roig Gardens is one of the main tourist attractions. It was founded by Russian Colonel Nicolai Woevodsky and English aristocrat Dorothy Webster in 1927 and has a variety of more than 1,000 plants.

Cami de Ronda

Cami de Ronda is a lovely path that connects the main coastal towns. The scenic walk takes 30 minutes. After that, head to Manel Juanola i Reixach viewpoint.

From there, you’ll get a panoramic view of the old town, the most idyllic spot to watch the sunset.
