The top 20 signs of a good family break include having lots of stories to tell, hundreds of photos and videos on your phone – and needing a holiday to get over it, according to a study. The research, of 2,000 parents with children aged 16 and under, revealed the top indicators of a successful trip – with 30 percent believing not having a chance to think about work is a key one.
And 31 percent think it was a good holiday if you reply with a host of information about what you did when people ask how it was – rather than the usual “it was good, thanks”.
Others believe immediately rebooking a trip to the same location is a sign of a great break – along with children never complaining about being bored.
Alex Meyer, at Butlin’s, which commissioned the research to highlight its family midweek breaks from £49 – including children’s live shows, swimming, and unlimited fairground rides – said: “We all want our holidays to be memorable.
“And for many, a sign of a great trip is having a jam-packed schedule of activities and events that everyone enjoys.
“Ultimately, a great holiday should bring families closer together, with something for everyone involved.
“And the research also showed one of the signs of a truly great holiday is almost feeling the need for another one, due to having a fully action-packed week.”
It also emerged that, for 59 percent, it’s more important than ever to find holidays that offer good value as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite.
And 30 percent believe getting such value, and having lots of things included in the price, are one of the most important things about a trip away.
Of the family holidays respondents had been on, they estimated 58 percent were “truly great” – with 67 percent saying that when it boils down to it, such trips are the most important things in their lives.
Meanwhile, 16 percent think a holiday after a holiday would be in order if you’ve had a brilliant week away with the family, due to needing to recover from all the fun.
And more than half (55 percent) find it exciting when deciding where to go on a break – although 17 percent find it tricky, and 10 percent find it frustrating trying to keep everyone happy.
Great food, good weather, and having a swimming pool and a clean hotel were the among the more modest important components to a stay.

However, two-thirds think finding a holiday destination that caters for everyone’s desires, while offering great value, can be a tricky task.
As a result, 27 percent have had to resort to taking turns when picking a holiday location, according to the OnePoll data – although one in five have never let their kids pick where they go on holiday.
It also emerged 48 percent go on extended family holidays, inviting siblings, parents, and even grandparents.
Alex Meyer, from Butlins, added: “What’s clear from the research is that people want more for their money, and want to feel they’re getting real value from their trip away.
“This can be tricky when trying to cater for everyone, particularly if you’re looking to head away with your wider family, too.
“Thankfully, our resorts have everything in one place, so those who want to enjoy a variety of live shows as well as fun activities don’t have to look far, or pay any extra to put smiles on faces.”
