Tourists can improve their chances of a ‘free flight upgrade’ with key tips

First class plane tickets might be a tempting prospect but luxury travel unfortunately comes at a cost.

While first class flights might be out of reach for many Britons, Express.co.uk spoke to a travel expert to find out how Britons could improve their chances of getting a free upgrade.

Lucky Britons could be offered a free upgrade at the check-in desk or once they’ve boarded the plane.

In some cases, flight attendants are able to offer a free upgrade to passengers if there are spare seats available.

Sandra Thomas, from WeMustVisit, said: “It’s important to remember that it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get a free upgrade but there are a few things you can do to try and increase your chances.”

She told Express.co.uk: “Occasionally, airlines will offer an upgrade to individuals at check-in, so it pays to check in early in case economy is overbooked.

“If a flight is overbooked, you could offer to give up your seat for a later flight too in a bid to get an upgraded seat.”

The early bird catches the worm when it comes to free flight upgrades so it pays to check in early.

Sandra added: “Be sure to be always polite when asking – friendliness can go a long way – and it’s believed that dressing smartly can boost your chances of being noticed by airline staff for all the right reasons.”

Flight attendants might be more likely to choose passengers who are dressed smartly for an upgrade.

Sandra said: “Frequent flyers can often be rewarded for their loyalty so if you do fly often be sure to join the airline’s frequent flyer program.

“Also, if you’re travelling for a special occasion, mentioning this to the airline staff can sometimes result in them offering an upgrade as a treat.”

If it’s a honeymoon, anniversary, stag or hen do or birthday trip, it’s worth mentioning the trip to the staff.

Sandra said: “Another tip is to fly during off-peak times when first class will be less busy and there could be more chances of getting a complimentary upgrade.

“Of course, it’s wise to note that these are just suggestions, and any upgrades are made at the airline’s discretion and availability. Being friendly, polite, and open to flying later can all help your chances, however.”
