Tourists slam ‘world’s most disappointing landmark’ for being ‘overhyped’

There are thousands of tourist attractions in the UK from beautiful rock formations to historical sites like Stonehenge and, of course, the famous museums. But, it seems like holidaymakers weren’t overly chuffed by one big-hitter.

The London Eye has been slammed as the most overrated attraction in the UK – and in fact, it made it onto a list of the top 10 most overrated landmarks in the world, after thousands of tourist reviews were analysed.

It seems that London wasn’t raved about by holidaymakers despite being the capital of England and around 1,976 years old! The London Eye was perhaps the most disappointing experience from Britain too.

The analysis showed that the London Eye ferris wheel, Buckingham Palace, and the Big Ben tower received poor reviews. The majority of London’s visitors felt bored and led them to the conclusion that these sights and the city itself are totally overrated.

Around 13.8% of tourists felt disappointed after visiting the city. However, despite this the London Eye is rated 4.5 out of five on TripAdvisor – and the reviews are mixed with 46,992 ‘excellent ratings’ as well as plenty of lower ones.

Jennifer H, from New Jersey in the United States wrote: “Before going to London, I thought I absolutely HAD to go to the London Eye, that it was a MUST-SEE item. I am here to tell you that the London Eye is very skippable.

“Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have any complaints about the London Eye. It is clean and efficient, they keep the line moving quickly. But at the end of the day, you are spending a lot of money to go on a giant Ferris Wheel.”

Meanwhile, Lidiya C said: "Boring and grey. Completely disappointing. Wish I never had that experience."

Raman, from India, added: "It's an overpriced and overhyped experience… The ride is not more than 15-20 minutes… If u money to burn then definitely do this."

Thankfully, some tourists did still enjoy the London Eye – so it's not a total bust! Sharon said: "We got a private pod for our group of 19. Highly recommend! The views were awesome and you didn't even know you were moving. We had a couple people afraid of heights and they loved it as well. Highly recommend!!"

While Martin P added: "Great, despite the rain. Everyone visiting London needs to do this, even in terrible weather, the views are spectacular. Very efficient and friendly staff too."

Thankfully, despite the classic attractions not quite pulling their weight anymore there’s still plenty to do in London if you decide to try out the newer options. Street food, concerts, nightlife, and art may be more interesting than old buildings and monarch sightings by future generations.

It wasn't just London that the study discovered was disappointing. It found that Khaosan Road in Bangkok was the most disappointing attraction in the world. This was followed by Water Planet Aqua Park in Antalya and then Orchard Road in Singapore.
