Travel expert says everyone touches the ‘dirtiest’ item in hotel rooms

There are plenty of perks to staying in a hotel, from the fact you can escape daily chores to the gorgeous rooms and huge beds you can find. Then of course there are plenty of clever hacks to enhance a trip from leaving a shoe in your safe to the extra use for a hairdryer.

However, there are also some downsides to hotels. Mostly, that they might not be as clean as your own home – and now one travel expert has revealed one key secret to the Daily Star.

He's warned that when staying in a hotel it’s more than likely you’ll have touched the 'dirtiest' item without thinking twice. So, maybe consider taking some anti-viral wipes with you on holiday this summer.

Anton Radchenko, Travel expert and founder of AirAdvisor, told the Daily Star the dirtiest place in a hotel room is actually the TV remote. It makes sense when you think about it.

"Upon arrival from airport, hotel rooms may seem clean, but there are several items and areas that can be considered dirty and harbour harmful bacteria and germs the TV remote is one to look out for," said Anton. "It’s frequently touched by different guests and is rarely disinfected – you could try disinfecting yourself or popping a clear plastic bag over it to avoid direct contact."

He commented: "Another item that isn’t generally cleaned between guests is the phone, this could do with a good wipe down before touching it. You could also try using the speaker function to avoid touching your face and wash your hands immediately after use."

Thankfully a quick wipe down of both devices should clean them up quickly. Then, you can get back to enjoying your holiday.

Anton isn’t the only person to share the dirty secrets of the hospitality trade. Flight attendant Kat Kamalani waned Brits to never drink from the glass cups left in the hotel room.

You’ll usually find them next to the sink or the kettle or coffee machine. Most of us would simply fill them with water before sipping away without a thought.

Kat, who posts online @katkamalani, commented: "Starting out, if you don't have a dishwasher in your hotel room I would never use the glass cups. "The reason being, you don't know if they were cleaned properly or just rinsed out from the last people who stayed in that hotel room."

In a video Kat showed a glass wrapped in single-use plastic and says the "fully sealed" glass is safe to drink from.if the cups have been sealed that means they’ve been removed from the room and treated before being returned.

Other places to be aware may be harbouring germs when going on holiday are plane tray tables and windows. So you should never eat directly from the tray or rest your face against the glass.
