UK’s most popular seaside towns with amazing beaches and theme parks

We Brits love a bit of sun, sand and sea. It's why coastal holiday hotspots are so popular in the summer months when we take time off work to relax and unwind.

Unfortunately, this year the school holidays have so far been battered by the intensely high temperatures across parts of Europe. Plus, wildfires in Rhodes and Corfu and warnings of the same in Spain have some holidaymakers worried about flying abroad.

Luckily, there are lots of gorgeous places by the sea right here in Blighty. While some of the most popular charge extremely high prices for a week-long stay there are some lesser known options that may tempt you.

Airbnb has helpfully highlighted the coastal parts of the country that are experiencing the biggest surges in bookings, showing which are up-and-coming as opposed to established holiday destinations. At the top of the list is Allerdale, the the north-west bit of the Lake District that remains remarkably out of the spotlight despite everything it has to offer.

The area is lucky enough to have two UNESCO World Heritage sites in its bounds – the Lake District National Park and the historic Hadrian’s Wall. There’s plenty to do in the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with long beaches, dunes and even wetlands. Towns like Keswick offer charming streets to explore, restaurants, impressive hikes and interesting boutiques to shop at.

Seaside towns like Maryport sit right by the sea and offer maritime museums, and pretty harbours. Alternatively, Cockermouth – the birthplace of William Wordsworth has lots of art and culture along with traditional bakers, cafes and bookshops.

Silloth on the beautiful Solway coast is a well looked after Victorian seaside resort. It has a gold curse, a huge green with a water play area and lots of cycling spots.

Second on the list is Flintshire in Wales, an area that is home to a host of historically intriguing sites such as the Grade 1 listed Gladstone’s library in Hawarden. In Flint town itself is the ruins of one of the country's most famous castles, which was built in 1277 medieval Europe by Edward I, painted by Turner and described by Shakespeare.

The area also has Talacre – a beach resort in the area with golden sand, dunes, a nearby arcade and beach restaurants. There’s also a pretty lighthouse that adds to the views.

Blackpool is third place on the list.. Having been a popular choice in the UK for decades, the Lancashire city has mixed reviews from Brits. But, it may be re-surging in popularity – and it still has the always fun pleasure beach with rollercoasters and games.

There's the bustling Central Pier with its attractions, shops and arcades, while Blackpool Tower remains a firm hit with visitors, mostly thanks to the incredible views of the city and sea you can enjoy from the top. Sunny days can be spent on the beach, while on rainy days there's plenty to do from the Blackpool Tower Circus to the arcades, cinemas and restaurants.

You can still grab some tasty fish and chips or even head to an escape room, the tramtown museum, or the new The Gruffalo & Friends Clubhouse.
