Hundreds of Flights Canceled As Winter Storm Pummels Northeast

Snow in Washington D.C.

Airlines canceled most flights in and out of New York City on Monday as a strong winter storm struck the east coast. Winter weather warnings remain in place through Tuesday.

Newark Liberty International Airport had 71% of its departing and 80% of arrival flights canceled Monday, according to FlightAware. At JFK Airport, 72% of both departing and arriving flights were canceled and at LaGuardia, 91% of departing flights and 88% of arriving flights were canceled.

In response to the storm, airlines are offering passengers the ability to change their flights for free. American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue and United have all issued travel waivers for travelers flying to select cities in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions through Feb. 2.

Passengers aboard Southwest with affected flights can rebook their reservations within 14 days of the original flight. For more information on how to change a flight due to the winter storm, visit your airline's website.

The storm continues to impact major cities from Washington, D.C. to Boston, as well as inland across northeastern Pennsylvania, New York state, and most of New England, The New York Times reported. Heavy snow and high winds are expected throughout the Northeast. Drivers are urged to stay off the roads through 7 p.m. Tuesday when the Winter Storm Warning lifts, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

Parts of the Northeast have received more than a foot of snow. So far, New Jersey has reported the most snowfall, with 16 inches of snow so far in Long Hill Township, less than 30 miles east of New York City.

New York and New Jersey governors both declared a state of emergency.

"Stay home," Cuomo wrote on Twitter.

The storm has moved across the country over the past week. It brought six feet of snow and heavy rain to California and dropped about eight inches of snow in Chicago before moving east.
