Amex and Resy Have a New Way to Help Small Restaurants — and It Means You’ll Eat Better on Tuesdays

A lot of restaurants are teetering on the edge of closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and now, there's a new way to help your favorite local eateries and get a little back in return (besides a delicious meal, of course).

American Express has teamed up with reservation website Resy for a new campaign that encourages customers to order takeout, since dining in options are fairly limited right now. The new "Order In, Help Out" campaign asks customers to order takeout on Tuesdays, generally the slowest night of the week for restaurants, and get back new dining rewards.

According to the American Express Independent Restaurant Insight Study, 89% of small, independent restaurant owners say they depend on takeout orders to stay afloat. The study also estimated that the simple act of ordering takeout can generate, on average, more than $700 million in daily sales for the industry –– which can truly make or break a small restaurant in the wake of a pandemic.

"We all miss our favorite local restaurants – the places where we've shared meals with family, celebrated special occasions with friends and relied on for late night cravings. As those experiences have been put on hold, the survival of our favorite places are in jeopardy," said Elizabeth Rutledge, Chief Marketing Officer, American Express, in a statement. "With Order In, Help Out, we hope to inspire people to help keep our local restaurants in business, especially during the winter months, one of the slowest and toughest times of the year."

American Express created a hub on Resy dedicated to local takeout places, where people can find a collection of stories and guides to help inspire their Tuesday night dining options and learn about independent restaurants near them. In return, now through Dec. 31, American Express Card Members can get new rewards like Delta SkyMiles or points from Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy, or enroll in an offer to earn up to $220 in statement credits at U.S. restaurants, after they dine in or take out. Green Card Members are already able to earn 3X Membership Rewards points and U.S. Gold Card Members can earn 4X points on restaurants, including takeout and delivery.

Both American Express and Resy are encouraging customers to share their #TakeOutTuesday experiences on social media.
