Winter weather affects operations at several U.S. airports

A winter storm brought a mix of rain, freezing rain and snow to the middle section of the U.S. on Wednesday, causing airlines to cancel hundreds of flights.

Frigid weather began arriving Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan saw freezing rain, sleet and snow. The Dallas area is bracing for snow and sub-freezing temperatures.

According to flight-tracker FlightAware, there were more than 1,500 flight cancellations in the U.S. as of Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time.

At St. Louis Lambert, 150 outbound flights were canceled, amounting to 78% of the airport’s service. Other airports affected by winter weather or impending winter weather were Chicago O’Hare, Chicago Midway, Detroit Metro, Dallas/Fort Worth, Dallas Love Field, Kansas City, Denver and Indianapolis. 

Even airports not directly affected by winter weather had cancellation rates in the 5% range, including New York LaGuardia, Newark, Washington Reagan National and Washington Dulles.
