Brits slam UK hotel that’s ‘absolute dog hole’ with urine and mould in rooms

Tourists staying at a hotel in Birmingham have slammed the venue as an "absolute dog hole" and complained of urine and blood around rooms, and mould in the bathrooms. A number of UK hotels have come under fire recently – with some hotel chains being ranked worse than others by Which?

However, the Norfolk Hotel in Birmingham has been saddled with an alarming number of terrible reviews on site TripAdvisor. The hotel received a ranking of just 1.5 out of five, with 492 of 667 reviews being marked as 'terrible' – ultimately causing the hotel to be classed as "poor" on the travel website.

The hotel offers over 100 rooms all with en-suite bathrooms and sits just 10 minutes drive away from Birmingham city centre, so it's actually in an ideal location for those who want to head into England’s second city for a day out. It also has a restaurant next door offering breakfast and dinner, and there are TVs and tea and coffee facilities in each room.

Unfortunately, it seems that the amenities on offer aren’t enough to pull up the hotel’s ratings – and holidaymakers have complained of "nightmare" stays, stains and burns in the rooms. Some even warned others not to visit.

One such complaint was posted by Denise D, who noted that the hotel was an "absolute dog hole." She added: "Never mind p**s on the toilet seat, smelt and felt like someone had p**sed the bed. Fag burns on the mattress, I wouldn't usually complain but this was a special weekend away with my hubby Harold.

"We don't get away often so we looked forward to a bit of us time and there was no us time on that stinky dog bed of a mattress. I am used to a bit of a stink as I have my two kitties, but that mattress was a cesspool of urine and Benson and Hedges.

"Curtains had stains all up them, I’m not surprised, obviously rather use the window than that mattress. I sadly am not that agile anymore since my knee replacement two years ago. We won't be back told our Lee and Michelle to stay clear as well."

Unfortunately, Denise isn’t the only holidaymaker to complain about a lack of cleanliness. Anne, from Trinidad and Tobago, said: "P**s on the toilet seat. It had blood on my bed and shower curtains. It had mould in the bathroom, sink and on the mats. There was a lot of crime in that area. I got robbed outside my hotel." She rated the location, rooms and service a poor one out of five stars on all counts.

Meanwhile, Richard S said that it was "the most revolting, stomach turning hotel in the world". He complained that the carpets were disgusting and that he had to swap rooms due to a "large brown wet stain on the duvet cover that had followed through to the mattress cover".

He commented: "Got a new room, went in and there was another two large stains on my bed. Gave up after that and just slept without any bed covers. Don't think these lot have a care in the world for the hygiene of this crack den, they've probably just given up."

Moira H wrote that "this so called hotel is the stuff of nightmares". It's also previously been slammed as one of the world's most revolting hotels – but when approached about the negative reviews, Norfolk Hotel declined to comment at the time.

However, not everyone has had a bad experience. In March last year, Kay E wrote that the hotel was "better than expected".

She said: "The room was actually a lot nicer and bigger than I expected from all the bad reviews. It had all necessaries like a good comfortable bed, desk, enough lights, nice clean bathroom, tea making facilities. It's true that the lift was not working, the sink had a little crack and the corridor and stair carpets were a bit worn out and the shower water pressure is not very strong. But actual room was clean and decent and there was no noise/smell/neighbour problem. The location was great too. Only about a mile and a bit to Birmingham city centre and with free parking spaces."

While she also noted that the receptionist was "friendly" and helpful. Another poster said that they had a "lovely clean room" as well as a "hot" shower and "spotless" bathroom – they added: "This hotel, based on this room, does not deserve it's terrible status!"

Another visitor last year wrote: "I've just stayed at Norfolk hotel for 2 nights. I'd come for a family party and needed somewhere to base myself. Was it the best? No. I've stayed in far worse places. The lift was out of order but thats ok, who doesn't need some extra cardio?

"The room itself was perfectly fine, it was clean and had everything I needed. The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. It's not the quietest of places due to the young groups visiting but hey, we were all young once. I was speaking to the lovely chap on reception and he said the new lift will be installed this month and they were hoping to completely renovate the hotel in the next couple of months. I would absolutely stay here again!"

Norfolk Hotel was approached for comment but did not respond by the time of publication.
