There are many hacks to bring extra luggage on board without paying but one of the most popular methods involves using a pillowcase to pack extra clothes. Many videos have been shared on social media where passengers can be seen walking with a pillow through the airport, going through security and boarding the plane carrying their cushion.

However, passengers don’t use the pillow to have a more comfortable rest during the flight but to carry their belongings.

This is a very clever hack to store the items that don’t fit in the carry-on or checked-in luggage and bring an extra bag on board for free.

The trick is completely legal and although the airport security control scanner can see what is inside the “fake pillow”, many officers “won’t say anything”, some claim.

Many users commented on social media sharing their thoughts and their own experiences with one saying: “Yesterday we arrived in Venice with two cushions like this!”

Another one explained: “I did it on two transatlantic flights. It worked!” and a third one added: “It certainly seems genius to me”.

Commenting on a recent TikTok video, passenger Tamara Harland, claimed the airport security officers “know because it literally goes through an X-ray machine, but they don’t care”.

Another social media user named Ornella agreed saying: “The scanner still picks up everything, but clever idea!”

TikTok user @persiansofi, revealed: “I work in the airport and I can tell you, we all know” and @ronza__ronza asked: “Is it not illegal?”

She replied saying: “No, it’s not. You can bring a small pillow with you always, and if it’s filled with clothing instead of what’s inside pillows then that’s ok.”

Many agreed this is a very clever hack so “you won’t pay for an extra bag with the airline”. User Asard added: “That’s like carrying a bag with stuff in it” and Keesha Smith said: “That’s actually pretty smart.”

Flight attendant Miguel Muñoz previously told Express.co.uk another way to carry an extra bag for free.

He revealed that “duty-free bags don’t count as carry-on baggage,” which is something most passengers are not aware of.

The crew member explained: “If you have something that doesn’t fit in your suitcase or you want to bring an extra bag on board, here’s the trick.

“All you have to do is carry a duty-free bag. Or ask for one at the duty-free shop and you place whatever you want in the shopping bag.”

The flight attendant said that “there is obviously limited space, but at least you are bringing an extra bag to the cabin with you”.

He explained: “I know the trick because I always do this when I fly as a passenger.

“And when I see people coming on board with a duty-free bag that looks VERY full I always assume they are using it for this purpose as it obviously doesn’t contain just one perfume or bottle of wine.”

Miguel explained that “a lot of crew don’t know this and most won’t realise”.

“If you come on board with one piece of luggage, which you are allowed to, and a duty-free bag with some of your belongings, no one will say anything.”

He added; “Now you know. If you ever find yourself in that situation, just put whatever you need in a duty-free bag. You are welcome!”
