Flight attendant shares safety travel tip after woman breaks nose while flying

Nobody wants to sit with an angry group of people for hours in an enclosed space, and one flight attendant has explained that reclining your seat unexpectedly can cause big problems when flying,

Kevin is a flight attendant who has shared on his TikTok account @ichbinvin has shared that there is an etiquette for when you should recline your seat on an airplane and that getting it wrong can cause arguments or even broken bones.

In his video, Kevin said: “One time when I was working a flight and a woman told me that she broke her nose because the person in front of her reclined her seat too quickly.”

Anyone wishing to get comfy on a flight and recline their seat think about the time of day and carefully do it according to Kevin, otherwise “people get all upset, they feel like you’re invading their personal space.”

In order to recline your seat, Kevin explained: “If the stars align and you say ‘okay I’m going to recline my seat’, do it gently. There’s no need to push the button and put all of your body weight back into the seat in order to recline your seat. There’s no need for that.”

Kevin said he understands that passengers can recline their seat whenever they want, but if people want not be an “a**hole” and earn the respect of the airline staff, then there is an appropriate time to do it.

He said: “So think of the question, ‘Can I recline my seat?’ not as a question but more of a balancing act of two very important things, the time of day and the length of the flight.”

If taking an one-hour flight in the middle of the daytime, Kevin said “there’s no need to recline your seat” but it is fine to do for a “one-hour flight at five in the morning.”

However, Kevin said that passengers taking a flight that is over three hours are perfectly fine reclining their seats whenever they want. He said: “Anything over three hours, it dosen’t matter the time of day, I would say go ahead and recline your seat.”

However, those on a two-hour flight are in a “grey area” and should “read the room” if they wish to tilt their seat back.

Kevin said he knows some people will dismiss his advice, and he is simply sharing his opinion on how to be an exceptional passenger.

He said: “Let me just preface by saying, you can do what you want, you paid for your ticket because I know there are people in the comments saying ‘I paid for my ticket, I can do whatever I want.’

“Yes well that may be true, but it doesn’t make you not an a**hole.”

In Kevin’s video comment section, many users had strong opinions about when it is okay to recline a seat.

One confirmed it can be dangerous, and wrote: “Thinking back to the time I got cracked in the skull while leaning forward to get something and the passenger rammed her seat back so fast you’d think she’d been pushed by the Hulk.”

Some people were against reclining seats on a plane, as one person said: “Just don’t. I’m 6 feet tall and I’m telling you, just don’t. Especially not on a long flight.”

However, some people said they reclined on a flight no matter the time of day. One user said: “Even On the 1 to 1.5 hrs flight- I recline! I work Night Shift and I usually fly straight off of a shift. I need a nap!.”
