‘I boarded a plane without my wife – she missed the flight and is furious’

A 47-year-old man, from the US’s Pacific North Region went off to board the plane without his wife while she went to get coffee.

The couple was travelling to see their 21-year-old daughter. He has posted his experience on Reddit using the code names Jess and Meg to explain his actions.

Posting on the Am I The A**hole (AITA) thread, he began by saying travelling with his wife isn’t the most relaxing experience.

He wrote: “Let me start by saying that travelling with my wife is not a great experience”.

“I am very type A, I like to have everything organised and make sure that we get where we need to be early, especially when travelling.

“My wife is the opposite, very ‘go with the flow’ and ‘we will get there when we get there’.  I do my best to meet in the middle, but not when travelling by plane.”

On this particular trip, they had to fly to a connecting city where they had around 25 minutes to change planes.

The Reddit user wrote: “We got to the terminal and had about 15 minutes until our plane was set to board. My wife tells me that she wants to get coffee. T

here was a little market next to our terminal which sold coffee. ‘No, I want Starbucks,’ she said.

“Well, Starbucks was a rail ride away. I told her we couldn’t do that, we didn’t have enough time.”

The man’s wife went to get a Starbucks regardless and ended up missing her flight. Despite the airport staff calling her several times as they called boarding groups, she didn’t return.

The man boarded the plane without his wife anyway. He told his wife he’d meet her at the other end.

He said: “We are now home and she hasn’t talked to me since the trip, over a week ago and is insisting that I am an a**hole. So, am I the a**hole? he asks.

The Reddit post has attracted many comments, mainly about timekeeping. One person wrote: “This. She is causing you tremendous stress and she doesn’t care at all. That is telling. She owes you a big apology for all the lack of consideration and for the petulant follow-up”.

Another said: “Your wife is very selfish. Imagine missing time with your child because you thought coffee was more important?”
