If you think you know what it feels like to live the high life, a lavish new coffee table book will make you think again.

Mountain Escapes – The Finest Hotels and Retreats from the Alps to the Andes, published by teNeues (www.teneues.com), showcases jaw-dropping retreats set amid breathtaking mountain landscapes that are beyond your wildest dreams.

More than 50 hotels are featured in the tome, including a sensational South African safari camp; a hotel in Bali with one of the most beautiful swimming pools in the world; an Australian retreat set amid the splendour of the Blue Mountains; a breathtaking chalet built from Swiss pine and natural stone on a mountain plateau in Austria, and a hotel in Peru with rooms scattered amid orchid trails and tea fields.

The introduction to the book enthuses that it contains ‘stunning shots by top photographers throughout’ leaving readers ‘fully immersed in a glorious display of nature and architecture that invites you to dream’.

It adds: ‘Those who find themselves drawn to the mountains can list countless reasons why. It might be the elegant curves through the deep snowbanks; breathtakingly remote peaks only accessible via helicopter… Or maybe it’s the subdued quiet far from the urban hubbub come summertime, with bubbling brooks and ice-cold streams, spectacular hiking trails, and fresh mountain air. Whatever their calling, this book offers a unique selection of the world’s most impressive mountain escapes.’

Below MailOnline Travel offers a sneak peek at some of the book’s most eye-catching images.

Pictured here is the Marataba Safari Lodge in South Africa’s Marakele National Park. The bushland surrounding the 15 guest suites is traversed by elephants, giraffes and antelopes heading to watering holes. The design of the suites has been inspired by huts of South African tribes, the book reveals. It adds: ‘The suites and main building, which is made entirely of stone and glass, contain furniture in the Prouvé style that would look just as good in an urban loft’
